SYs galore in Northern China

Bill Alborough sent me a hand written report which covers September/October 2002 from which I have extracted the following key information:

Anshan Steelworks

The steelworks group now has its own travel agency, an alternative to CITS for arranging visits. Still using a significant amount of steam. Working locos seen were the following SYs:

0115, 0306, 0571, 0833, 1035, 155, 1566, 1568

Tangshan Coal Mine

Afternoon Miners' trains leave the old shaft at 13.30, 14.00, 14.30 and 15.08. SYs here include 0031, 0355, 0955, 0964 (1679 away for overhaul).

Tangshan Steelworks

The current fleet is reported to be 31 steam locos and no diesels. The (new) management is reluctant to admit visitors.

JS 5992, 8413, 6019 (stored), 8414 (overhaul)

SY seen 0518, 0551, 0586, 0674, 0777, 0981, 1020, 1070, 1071, 1127, 1138, 1439, 1516, 1695, 3006. Also said to be here are 0982, 1090, 1106, 1107, 1582, 1591, 1669, 1740, 1746

Benxi Steelworks

No access allowed to North Depot ('Problems with recent visitors').

South depot has non-standard locos:

5 0-4-0F stored
50 2-6-2 PL2 stored
28 0-6-0T XK2 stored

SY working 701, 702, 709, 710, 711, 712, 713, 714, 715, 716, 717, 718, 719, 722, 723, 725, 726, 730, 731, 732, 733, 734, 735, 736

Bill reports: "Frenetic activity at blast furnaces, good activity at south depot, slag tipping half hourly but with diesel at north site. There are said to be be 2 0-4-0F stored at the north site shed along with active SYs.

Beitai Steelworks

Said to be 100% steam with 19 SYs:

0322, 0448, 0792, 0825, 0864, 0930, 1005, 1054, 1077, 1114, 1131, 1514, 1560, 1561, 1567, 1648 1684, 2019

Bill reports; "highly dangerous site, much action, slippery ballast, access to shed via running line, slag trains everywhere, extreme care advised. Environmentalists have forced hooters only, no whistles!" Sounds fun and other visitors have recommended the place....

Fuxin Mining Railway

Bill found this rather disappointing in line with others who have reported reduced activity in a town which is bleak when the sun doesn't shine. However, there are still quite a few active steam locos here even if there are long breaks in activity and the passenger service is reduced.

Active SYs seen were:

0112, 0540, 0849, 0911, 0912, 0940, 0941, 0989, 1210, 1319, 1320, 1378, 1395, 1396, 1460, 1818

Hegang Mining Railway

Bill reports both open-cast mines closed with very little electric activity (electric locos are being cut up) and most trains steam hauled, except for the Lingbei passengers.

Active SYs seen were:

0354, 0498, 0561, 0635, 0683, 0799, 0905, 1030, 1370, 1464, 1498, 1685, 3013, 3014, 3024

0472 (awaiting repairs), 0555 (ex-works but not running yet)

0642, 0786, 3023 (are here but were not seen)

Daqing Coal Company (Tiefa)

Continues with SYs (and JS 5029 as pet) but the local authority are clearly 'anti-steam' and the night time passenger service has been cut as a result.
